Type I certification covers servicing which kind of appliance?
Answer: Small appliances with 5 lbs or less of refrigerant
Type I certification is for small appliances manufactured, charged, and hermetically sealed with 5 pounds or less of refrigerant.
What is the minimum required recovery efficiency when using recovery equipment manufactured before November 15, 1993 on a small appliance?
Answer: 90% with operating compressor / 80% with inoperative compressor
Older recovery equipment must recover 90% of refrigerant when the appliance compressor works and 80% when it does not.
For recovery equipment manufactured after November 15, 1993, what recovery level is required for small appliances?
Answer: 90% or 4 inches of vacuum
Newer recovery equipment must recover 90% of refrigerant or evacuate the small appliance to 4 inches of mercury vacuum.
A 'system-dependent' (passive) recovery device relies on what to remove refrigerant?
Answer: The appliance's own compressor and pressure
System-dependent recovery uses the appliance's internal pressure and/or compressor to push refrigerant into a recovery container.
System-dependent recovery equipment may only be used on appliances containing how much refrigerant?
Answer: 5 lbs or less
Passive (system-dependent) recovery is restricted to small appliances with 15 pounds or less of refrigerant — but Type I appliances are 5 lbs or less.
When recovering from a small appliance with an inoperative compressor, what improves recovery?
Answer: Accessing both the high and low sides of the system
Accessing both sides of the system speeds and improves recovery when the compressor cannot circulate refrigerant.
Striking or tapping the compressor of a small appliance during recovery is intended to do what?
Answer: Free trapped refrigerant and oil
Light tapping can dislodge refrigerant and oil trapped inside the compressor so more can be recovered.
