Emotional Intelligence (Personality and Self) 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which Big Five personality trait is most strongly associated with high emotional intelligence?
- Conscientiousness
- Agreeableness
- Neuroticism (low) (Correct answer)
- Openness to Experience
Correct answer: Neuroticism (low)
Low neuroticism (emotional stability) is most strongly linked to EI because it reflects the ability to manage negative emotions without being overwhelmed.
Question 2: A person with a secure attachment style in adulthood is likely to demonstrate which EI characteristic?
- Avoidance of emotional conversations
- Comfort with emotional intimacy and interdependence (Correct answer)
- Heightened emotional reactivity under stress
- Suppression of personal needs to please others
Correct answer: Comfort with emotional intimacy and interdependence
Secure attachment fosters comfort with emotional closeness, a key sign of developed emotional intelligence and healthy self-concept.
Question 3: What does 'self-monitoring' refer to in the context of personality and EI?
- Tracking your calorie intake and sleep patterns
- Regulating behavior based on social cues and situational demands (Correct answer)
- Judging others' emotional states from facial cues
- Logging emotions in a daily journal
Correct answer: Regulating behavior based on social cues and situational demands
Self-monitoring describes the tendency to observe and adjust one's own behavior to fit social contexts, which overlaps with social awareness in EI.
Question 4: According to trait theory, which combination of traits would predict the LOWEST emotional intelligence?
- High openness, high agreeableness
- High conscientiousness, low neuroticism
- High neuroticism, low agreeableness (Correct answer)

High neuroticism (emotional instability) combined with low agreeableness predicts difficulty managing personal emotions and relating empathetically to others.
Question 5: The concept of 'ego resilience' in personality psychology closely parallels which EI competency?

- Empathy
- Emotion regulation under stress (Correct answer)
- Social skills
Correct answer: Emotion regulation under stress
Ego resilience — the capacity to adapt flexibly under stress — maps directly onto EI's emotion regulation competency.
Question 6: Which self-concept distortion is MOST likely to impair accurate emotional self-assessment?
- High self-esteem
- Illusory superiority (better-than-average effect) (Correct answer)
- Realistic self-appraisal
- High self-efficacy
Correct answer: Illusory superiority (better-than-average effect)
Illusory superiority leads people to overestimate their emotional competencies, creating a blind spot that blocks genuine self-awareness.
Question 7: In Mayer and Salovey's four-branch model, 'using emotions to facilitate thought' is best exemplified by:
- Naming the emotion you feel before a meeting
- Deliberately entering a positive mood to boost creative brainstorming (Correct answer)
- Suppressing anxiety before a presentation
- Identifying a colleague's frustration from their tone
Correct answer: Deliberately entering a positive mood to boost creative brainstorming
Strategically inducing a positive emotional state to enhance creativity illustrates the second branch — using emotions to facilitate cognitive tasks.
