  1. An elevator travels d floors per trip. After 12 trips it has covered 84 floors. What is d?

    Answer: 7

    12d = 84, so d = 84 ÷ 12 = 7 floors per trip.

  2. Solve for t: 5(t - 3) = 20

    Answer: 7

    Dividing both sides by 5: t - 3 = 4, so t = 7.

  3. If 2a + b = 14 and b = 4, what is a?

    Answer: 5

    Substituting b = 4: 2a + 4 = 14 → 2a = 10 → a = 5.

  4. A tension spring stretches 2.5 cm for every 10 N of force. How many cm does it stretch under 70 N?

    Answer: 17.5 cm

    Rate = 2.5/10 = 0.25 cm/N; 0.25 × 70 = 17.5 cm.

  5. Solve for p: 4p - 7 = p + 11

    Answer: 6

    Subtracting p from both sides: 3p - 7 = 11 → 3p = 18 → p = 6.

  6. If y = 3x - 2 and x = 5, what is y?

    Answer: 13

    y = 3(5) - 2 = 15 - 2 = 13.

  7. A counterweight is 150 kg heavier than the car it balances. Together they weigh 950 kg. How heavy is the counterweight?

    Answer: 550 kg

    Let car = x; x + (x+150) = 950 → 2x = 800 → x = 400; counterweight = 550 kg.
