  1. A cable drum holds 3x + 15 meters of cable. If x = 20, how many meters does it hold?

    Answer: 75

    Substituting x = 20: 3(20) + 15 = 60 + 15 = 75 meters.

  2. Solve for n: 7n - 4 = 45

    Answer: 7

    Adding 4 to both sides gives 7n = 49, so n = 49 ÷ 7 = 7.

  3. If two pulleys have a combined diameter of 48 cm and one is 12 cm larger than the other, what is the diameter of the smaller pulley?

    Answer: 18 cm

    Let smaller = x; x + (x+12) = 48 → 2x = 36 → x = 18 cm.

  4. Simplify: 4(2y + 3) - 2y

    Answer: 6y + 12

    Expanding gives 8y + 12 - 2y = 6y + 12.

  5. A motor runs at r revolutions per minute. After a speed increase of 150 rpm it runs at 750 rpm. What was r?

    Answer: 600

    r + 150 = 750, so r = 750 - 150 = 600 rpm.

  6. Solve for x: x/6 + 4 = 9

    Answer: 30

    Subtracting 4 from both sides gives x/6 = 5, so x = 30.

  7. Which value of m satisfies 3m + 2 = 2m + 9?

    Answer: 7

    Subtracting 2m from both sides: m + 2 = 9, so m = 7.
