What is endodontics?
Answer: The branch of dentistry dealing with the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the root — commonly root canal therapy
Endodontics focuses on the interior of the tooth (pulp) and root structures. Root canal treatment, the most common procedure, removes infected pulp tissue.
What is the difference between a dental filling and an inlay?
Answer: A filling is placed directly; an inlay is fabricated in a lab and then cemented into the prepared cavity
Direct fillings are placed and shaped in the mouth. Inlays are custom-made in a lab from impressions and then bonded into the prepared cavity for a precise fit.
What is a dental bridge?
Answer: A prosthetic that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent natural teeth or implants
A dental bridge literally bridges the gap left by missing teeth, with pontics (artificial teeth) supported by crowns on the neighboring teeth (abutments).
What is the purpose of a dental sealant?
Answer: To coat the chewing surfaces of back teeth with a protective barrier that prevents decay
Sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the grooves of premolars and molars, preventing bacteria and food particles from settling in these decay-prone areas.
What are dental veneers?
Answer: Thin shells of porcelain or composite bonded to the front of teeth to improve appearance
Veneers are custom-made thin shells that cover the front surface of teeth, used to correct discoloration, chips, gaps, or misalignment for cosmetic improvement.
What is periodontics?
Answer: The dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures
Periodontics specializes in the gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum — the structures that support the teeth.
