Question 1

Which calibration method applies when test weights of sufficient accuracy are physically placed on a scale to establish its span?

Accepted Answer

Deadweight calibration

Answer

Deadweight (or static weight) calibration uses certified test weights placed directly on the scale platform to set the span, providing the highest accuracy traceability.

Question 2

The term 'tare' on a digital scale refers to:

Accepted Answer

Zeroing the scale with a container on it to weigh only the contents

Answer

Tare subtracts the weight of an empty container from the display so that subsequent readings show only the net weight of the contents placed inside.

Question 3

A digital floor scale connected to an indicator shows correct readings, but the indicator's serial output to a printer is sending incorrect weight values. The most likely cause is:

Accepted Answer

Baud rate or data format mismatch between indicator and printer

Answer

Serial communication errors between a scale indicator and a peripheral are almost always configuration mismatches in baud rate, data bits, parity, or stop bits.

Question 4

What is 'minimum dead load' (MDL) in the context of scale testing?

Accepted Answer

The smallest load required before the scale begins to respond

Answer

Minimum dead load (also called minimum load or Min) is the smallest load for which the scale's weighing result is considered metrologically acceptable.

Question 5

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) shielding on a digital scale cable is important primarily because:

Accepted Answer

It protects the low-level mV load cell signal from radio frequency and electromagnetic interference

Answer

Load cell output signals are very small (in the millivolt range), making them highly susceptible to RFI/EMI noise that shielding helps block.
