What is the purpose of ergonomic assessment in manual handling?
Answer: To analyse the interaction between the worker, task, and environment to reduce injury risk
Ergonomic assessment examines how the worker interacts with the task, tools, and environment to identify risk factors and design solutions that reduce the physical demands and risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
What is a 'load' under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992?
Answer: Any movable object, including a person or animal
Under the regulations, a 'load' is defined as any discrete movable object, including a person (for example, a patient or injured worker) and an animal. It is not limited by weight or type of object.
What environmental factors should be considered in manual handling risk assessment?
Answer: Floor condition, lighting, space constraints, weather, temperature, and obstacles
Environmental factors include floor condition (wet, uneven, slopes), lighting levels, space constraints, temperature extremes, wind (for outdoor work), weather conditions, and the presence of obstacles or trip hazards.
How does the HSE recommend reducing the risk from pushing and pulling operations?
Answer: Reduce the force required, improve floor surfaces, use mechanical aids, and maintain equipment wheels
HSE recommends reducing push/pull forces by using well-maintained trolleys with good wheels, ensuring smooth floor surfaces, eliminating slopes where possible, and keeping loads at a manageable height for the worker.
What reporting requirement applies if a worker suffers a manual handling injury resulting in over 7 days' incapacitation?
Answer: It must be reported to the HSE under RIDDOR 2013
Under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) 2013, an employer must report to the HSE any injury that results in a worker being incapacitated for more than 7 consecutive days (not counting the day of the accident).
What is the HSE's MAC (Manual Handling Assessment Charts) tool?
Answer: A risk assessment tool that uses a colour-coded system to evaluate lifting, carrying, and team handling tasks
The MAC tool is a free HSE risk assessment tool that uses colour-coded bands (green, amber, red, purple) to help assessors evaluate the risk level of lifting, carrying, and team handling operations and prioritise improvements.
