CPM Preventative Maintenance & Equipment Calibration 2

Question 1

Trending vibration readings on a pump bearing to schedule replacement before failure is an example of which maintenance strategy?

Accepted Answer

Predictive maintenance

Answer

Predictive maintenance uses condition monitoring data such as vibration to time repairs before failure.

Question 2

In the United States, calibration standards should be traceable to which organization?

Accepted Answer

NIST

Answer

The National Institute of Standards and Technology maintains the national measurement standards that US calibrations trace back to.

Question 3

An instrument's as-found readings have been out of tolerance at its last three calibrations. What is the best action?

Accepted Answer

Shorten the calibration interval

Answer

Repeated as-found failures show the instrument drifts faster than the current interval allows, so the interval should be shortened.

Question 4

What minimum test accuracy ratio between the reference standard and the unit under test is commonly recommended?

Accepted Answer

4:1

Answer

A 4:1 ratio means the standard is at least four times more accurate than the device being calibrated.

Question 5

What is a common result of over-greasing a sealed or shielded electric motor bearing?

Accepted Answer

Increased bearing temperature and seal damage

Answer

Excess grease causes churning and friction that raises bearing temperature and can blow out seals.
