What is the main advantage of horizontal drilling compared to vertical drilling in tight reservoirs?
Answer: Greater contact length with the producing formation
Horizontal wells expose a much longer section of wellbore to the producing formation, dramatically increasing drainage area and production rates in tight rock.
What does 'ROP' measure in drilling operations?
Answer: Rate of Penetration (how fast the bit drills)
Rate of Penetration (ROP) measures how fast the drill bit advances through rock, typically expressed in feet per hour.
What is the purpose of centralizers on a casing string?
Answer: To keep casing centered in the wellbore for proper cement placement
Centralizers are spring-bow or rigid devices attached to the casing that hold it away from the wellbore wall, ensuring even cement distribution around the casing.
Which type of drill bit uses rolling toothed cones to crush and gouge rock?
Answer: Tricone roller cone bit
A tricone roller cone bit has three rotating cones with teeth or inserts that crush, chip, and gouge rock as they roll across the bottom of the wellbore.
What is 'water flooding' in secondary oil recovery?
Answer: Injecting water into the reservoir to maintain pressure and sweep oil toward producers
Water flooding injects water through injection wells to maintain reservoir pressure and physically displace oil toward producing wells, increasing recovery.
What is a 'liner' in well casing design?
Answer: A casing string that does not extend to the surface but is hung inside a previous casing string
A liner is a shorter casing string that hangs from and overlaps the bottom of the previous casing string, rather than running all the way to surface.
In gas lift operations, what is the role of gas lift valves?
Answer: They allow injected gas to enter the tubing at specific depths to lighten the fluid column
Gas lift valves are installed in mandrels on the tubing string and open at specific pressures to allow injected gas to enter and aerate the produced fluid column.
