Question 1

What is the recommended minimum clearance between a gate frame and gate post on the latch side?

Accepted Answer

1/2 inch

Answer

A 1/2-inch clearance on the latch side allows the gate to swing freely without binding while still maintaining a close fit to deter intrusion.

Question 2

Why are gate posts typically set deeper and in larger-diameter holes than standard line posts?

Accepted Answer

Gate posts bear greater cantilever and swing loads that require extra stability

Answer

Gate posts act as cantilever supports for the swinging gate load, generating much greater lateral stress on the footing than a static line post.

Question 3

Which hinge type is most suitable for heavy wooden double gates?

Accepted Answer

Heavy-duty adjustable ball-bearing hinge

Answer

Heavy-duty adjustable ball-bearing hinges provide the load capacity and three-dimensional adjustment needed to keep heavy double gate leaves properly aligned over time.

Question 4

On which side of a gate are hinges always installed?

Accepted Answer

The hinge post side

Answer

Hinges are attached to the hinge post (the post on the pivot side), which is the fixed structural anchor that the gate swings from.

Question 5

What is the standard minimum number of hinges required for a 6-foot tall wooden gate leaf?

Accepted Answer

3 hinges

Answer

A 6-foot tall gate requires three hinges — top, middle, and bottom — to distribute the gate weight evenly and prevent racking or sag.
