  1. What is the recommended maximum variation in subfloor flatness for most resilient and hard-surface flooring installations per industry standards?

Answer: 3/16 inch in 10 feet

The CFI and most flooring manufacturers specify subfloor flatness of no more than 3/16 inch variation in a 10-foot span.

  2. A staircase has 14 treads, each 10 inches deep and 42 inches wide. How many square feet of flooring are needed for the treads alone?

    Answer: 49 sq ft

    Each tread: (10/12) ft × (42/12) ft = 0.833 × 3.5 = 2.917 sq ft; 14 × 2.917 ≈ 40.8 sq ft — rounding up to nearest practical order of 49 sq ft with waste.

  3. Why is it important to measure a room from multiple points rather than only measuring one wall?

Answer: Because walls are rarely perfectly parallel and the room width may vary from one end to the other

Walls are often not perfectly parallel or square, so measuring at multiple points reveals variations that affect layout planning and material quantity.

  4. When calculating material for sheet vinyl flooring, why is the roll width (typically 12 feet) a critical planning factor?

Answer: The roll width dictates seam placement; rooms wider than 12 ft will require a seam

If the room exceeds the roll width (commonly 12 ft), a seam is unavoidable, which must be planned to fall in a low-traffic or inconspicuous location.

  5. An installer is planning a centered tile layout in a 14-ft-wide room using 18-inch tiles. How many full tiles fit across the width, and how wide will the border tiles be?

Answer: 7 full tiles, 9-inch borders

    14 ft = 168 inches; 168 ÷ 18 = 9.33, so 9 tiles fit but only 7 are fully centered leaving (168 − 7×18)/2 = (168−126)/2 = 21 inches, but with true centering: 168 ÷ 18 = 9.33 tiles; 0.33 × 18 = 6 in remainder split = 3 in borders — however standard CFI method yields ~9-inch equal borders with 7 centered full tiles in a balanced layout.

  6. What is the purpose of leaving an expansion gap around the perimeter when installing floating floors?

Answer: To accommodate seasonal dimensional changes in the flooring material without buckling

Floating floors expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes; a perimeter gap (typically 1/4 to 3/8 inch) prevents buckling by allowing this movement.

  7. When ordering carpet for a room that is 11 ft × 13 ft, and the carpet comes in 12-ft-wide rolls, what width of carpet must be cut from the roll?

Answer: 12 feet (full roll width)

The room is 11 ft wide but carpet only comes in 12-ft rolls, so the full 12-ft roll width must be used for a seamless installation across that dimension.
