Answer: 20
Using J = 2M and J + 10 = 1.5(M + 10) gives M = 10 and J = 20.
A recruit buys 3 shirts at $25 each and 2 pairs of pants at $45 each, paying with $200. How much change does he receive?
Answer: $35
Total cost = $75 + $90 = $165; change = $200 − $165 = $35.
What is the next number in the sequence: 3, 6, 12, 24, ___?
Answer: 48
Each term is doubled; 24 × 2 = 48.
A soldier earns $3,200 per month. After a 12.5% raise, what is his new monthly salary?
Answer: $3,600
Raise = 0.125 × $3,200 = $400; new salary = $3,200 + $400 = $3,600.
A fuel tank is 3/8 full. After adding 30 liters it is 5/8 full. What is the tank's total capacity?
Answer: 120 liters
30 liters = 5/8 − 3/8 = 2/8 = 1/4 of the tank; total capacity = 30 ÷ (1/4) = 120 L.
The sum of three consecutive even numbers is 78. What is the largest of the three numbers?
Answer: 28
If the smallest is x, then x + (x+2) + (x+4) = 78 gives x = 24, so the largest is 28.
A cadet spends 40% of his allowance on food and 25% on transportation, saving the rest. If he saves $70, what is his total allowance?
Answer: $200
Savings = 100% − 40% − 25% = 35%; $70 = 35% of allowance; allowance = $70 ÷ 0.35 = $200.
