  1. A formula gives output = (input × 3) − 7. If the output is 26, what is the input?

    Answer: 11

    3x − 7 = 26 → 3x = 33 → x = 11.

  2. Of 30 soldiers, 18 qualify in rifles and 14 in pistols, with 6 qualifying in both. How many qualify in neither?

    Answer: 4

    Qualified in at least one = 18 + 14 − 6 = 26; neither = 30 − 26 = 4.

  3. What is the next number in the sequence: 2, 6, 18, 54, ?

    Answer: 162

    Each term is multiplied by 3: 54 × 3 = 162.

  4. A soldier earns $48,000 per year and pays 22% tax on income above $15,000. How much income tax does he pay?

    Answer: $7,260

    Taxable income = $48,000 − $15,000 = $33,000; tax = $33,000 × 0.22 = $7,260.

  5. One truck makes 4 trips carrying 850 kg each; another makes 3 trips carrying 1,100 kg each. What is the total cargo moved?

    Answer: 6,700 kg

    Truck 1: 4 × 850 = 3,400 kg; Truck 2: 3 × 1,100 = 3,300 kg; total = 6,700 kg.

  6. A rectangular field is 3 times as long as it is wide. If the perimeter is 96 m, what is the area?

    Answer: 432 m²

    2(w + 3w) = 96 → w = 12, length = 36; area = 12 × 36 = 432 m².

  7. A soldier starts with 3/4 of a full water supply and uses 2/5 of what he has. What fraction of the full supply remains?

    Answer: 9/20

    Remaining = (3/4) × (1 − 2/5) = (3/4) × (3/5) = 9/20.
