Using the 3-4-5 right triangle method, a pipefitter wants to establish a square corner on a pipe base plate. They measure 3 feet along one wall. How far along the perpendicular wall must they measure to verify the corner is exactly 90°?
Answer: 4 feet, and the diagonal should measure 5 feet
The 3-4-5 method: measure 3 units on one side, 4 units on the adjacent side, and if the diagonal is exactly 5 units, the angle is 90°.
A rolling offset requires a pipe to move 8 inches to the right and 6 inches down. What is the total offset (hypotenuse of the setback triangle)?
Answer: 10 inches
Total offset = √(rise² + run²) = √(6² + 8²) = √(36 + 64) = √100 = 10 inches.
A 6-inch NPS Schedule 40 pipe has a wall thickness of 0.280 inches and an OD of 6.625 inches. What is the inside diameter?
Answer: 6.065 inches
ID = OD − (2 × wall thickness) = 6.625 − (2 × 0.280) = 6.625 − 0.560 = 6.065 inches.
What is the approximate weight of water in a 12-inch NPS Schedule 40 pipe that is 20 feet long? (12" Sch 40: ID = 11.938", weight of water ≈ 0.0361 lb/in³)
Answer: 484 lbs
Volume = π/4 × ID² × length = 0.7854 × 11.938² × 240" = 26,740 in³. Weight = 26,740 × 0.0361 = ~965 lbs.
If a pipe requires a miter cut to make a 30° change of direction using two pieces, what angle must each cut be made at relative to the pipe axis?
Answer: 15 degrees from square (perpendicular to pipe axis)
For a two-piece miter, each piece is cut at half the total angle: 30° ÷ 2 = 15° from perpendicular (square). The cut angle from the pipe axis = 90° − 15° = 75°.
A pump requires that its suction line be a minimum 5 pipe diameters of straight pipe before the suction flange. The pump has a 4-inch suction nozzle (4" NPS, OD = 4.500"). What is the minimum straight pipe length required?
Answer: 22.5 inches of straight pipe
Minimum straight pipe = 5 × OD = 5 × 4.500" = 22.5 inches.
