What the CMI is and how it works

According to ISSA – Cleaning Management Institute (CMI), the education division of ISSA, The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association, “Course Lessons Include: The Commercial Environment, The Chemistry of Cleaning, Basic Cleaning of Above-Floor Surfaces, Basic Cleaning of Hard Floor Surfaces, Basic Cleaning of Carpeted Floor Surfaces, Basic Cleaning of Restrooms and Shower Rooms, Customer Service.”^[1]

CMI certification shows that a custodial worker understands the core methods, chemistry and safety practices used in commercial cleaning. It is offered at Basic and Advanced levels, both on V.7 material. The Basic course has 7 lessons, from The Commercial Environment through Customer Service. The Advanced course has 4 lessons.

How you take it. ISSA offers three routes: the online certification course, the custodial handbook with an online or printed exam, or onsite training. The online Basic course costs $162.99 for ISSA members and $335.99 for non-members. The Advanced course costs $162.99 for members and $315.00 for non-members. The Basic and Advanced bundle costs $325 for members and $375 for non-members.

Scoring and timing. You need 80% or more in each lesson. After you buy the exam you have 60 days to complete it. If you do not pass a module, you can request a reset for $26.49 per module within that window. Online candidates download a digital certificate when they pass. Printed exams are generally graded within 2 weeks of receipt, and large batches can take longer.

Validity and renewal. Each certification lasts 2 years and expires in its anniversary month. To renew, you take an online recertification exam, which costs $57.99 per level or $115.98 for Basic and Advanced together. Example 1

Question: In custodial management, what is the purpose of a 'work loading' calculation?

2. To calculate how many staff hours are needed to clean a given area

Explanation:

B is correct. A work loading calculation estimates how many staff hours an area needs to be cleaned. It starts from the cleanable area and the rate at which one worker can clean it. Supervisors use the result to set crew sizes and route assignments.

• A is wrong because supply budgets come from usage and purchasing records, not from labour time.
• C is wrong because preventive maintenance follows the equipment manufacturer's schedules and the service logs.
• D is wrong because absenteeism is an attendance record. It can affect whether the planned hours are actually covered, but it is not what work loading measures.

Rule to remember: work loading answers the question 'how much labour does this space need?' Divide the area by the production rate to get the hours.

Question: Which practice conserves water in cleaning?

Answer: B. Using microfiber cloths

Explanation:

B is correct. Microfiber holds more liquid and traps soil in its fine fibres. A damp microfiber cloth or mop therefore cleans well with less water and less chemical solution, and it often needs less rinsing.

• C is wrong because a leak loses water all the time, and custodians are expected to report leaks promptly.

3. Fix weak spots before you buy. You need 80% in every lesson, so a strong overall score will not make up for one weak lesson. Repeat the sets for your weakest areas, such as Floor Care & Surface Types or Restroom Sanitation & Infection Control.
4. Add the safety and conduct sets. Use Occupational Health & Safety and Customer Service & Professional Conduct to cover questions that draw on more than one lesson.
5. Buy the exam and take it one module at a time. Leave time within the window in case you need a reset.
