What is an aligned section?
Answer: A section where off-axis features are rotated into the cutting plane so they appear true shape in the section view
In an aligned section, features such as holes or spokes that do not lie in the cutting plane are rotated about the object's center axis into the cutting plane so their true relationship is shown without distortion.
When sectioning adjacent parts in an assembly drawing, how must the hatching differ between parts?
Answer: Adjacent parts must have different hatch angles or spacing to visually differentiate them
In assembly sections, adjacent parts must use different hatch angles (e.g., 45°, 135°, 30°) or different spacing so each component can be instantly distinguished from its neighbors.
What is a secondary auxiliary view?
Answer: A view projected from a primary auxiliary view to reveal the true shape of an oblique (double-inclined) surface
A secondary auxiliary view is projected from a primary auxiliary view to show the true shape of an oblique surface that is inclined in two directions and cannot be shown true size in any single primary auxiliary view.
Which standard parts are typically NOT sectioned even when the cutting plane passes through them in an assembly section?
Answer: Bolts, nuts, shafts, pins, keys, and ball bearings
Standard fasteners and machine elements such as bolts, nuts, shafts, pins, keys, and bearings are shown in exterior view even when cut, because sectioning them adds no useful design information.
In a half-section view, what type of line separates the sectioned half from the unsectioned half?
Answer: A centerline (thin chain line) coinciding with the axis of symmetry
The dividing line in a half-section is the centerline of the object's symmetry — a thin chain line — because the cut extends to the axis of symmetry rather than through a physical boundary.
What is the primary advantage of an auxiliary view over a standard principal view for an inclined surface?
Answer: The true size and shape of the inclined surface are preserved, eliminating foreshortening distortion
Because the auxiliary view projects perpendicular to the inclined surface, all dimensions appear undistorted, allowing accurate measurement and dimensioning of the true shape.
In an offset section, what is shown at the bends of the cutting plane line in the resulting section view?
Answer: No line is shown at the bends — they are suppressed to avoid creating false impressions of object edges
The bends in an offset cutting plane line are not represented by any line in the section view, because doing so would falsely suggest the presence of an edge or wall on the actual object.
