What is encapsulation in the OSI model?
Answer: Adding protocol headers and trailers at each layer as data moves down the stack
Encapsulation adds layer-specific control information at each layer going down the stack.
Which OSI layer provides end-to-end flow control and reliable delivery?
Answer: Transport
The Transport Layer (Layer 4) provides end-to-end flow control, error recovery, and reliable delivery via TCP.
What role does the Physical Layer play in network communication?
Answer: Converts data frames into physical signals for transmission over the medium
The Physical Layer (Layer 1) converts digital data into physical signals (electrical, optical, or radio) for the medium.
What is multiplexing at the Transport Layer?
Answer: Enabling multiple applications to share a network connection using port numbers
Port numbers let multiple applications simultaneously use the same network connection.
Which Data Link sublayer handles media access control and physical addressing?
Answer: MAC (Media Access Control)
The MAC sublayer manages physical addressing (48-bit MAC addresses) and media access methods (CSMA/CD, CSMA/CA).
Why is the OSI model called a 'reference model' rather than a protocol specification?
Answer: It defines functional layers and responsibilities without specifying exact protocols
The OSI model describes what each layer should do without mandating specific protocols, making it a universal reference.
