  1. What is the next number in the series: 100, 91, 83, 76, 70, ___?

    Answer: 65

    Differences decrease by 1 each step: -9, -8, -7, -6, -5; so 70 - 5 = 65.

  2. If a jacket costs $84 after a 30% discount, what was the original price?

    Answer: $120

    $84 = 70% of original; original = $84 ÷ 0.70 = $120.

  3. Train A leaves at 9 AM at 60 mph. Train B leaves at 10 AM on the same track at 80 mph. When does Train B catch Train A?

    Answer: 1:00 PM

    Train A has a 60-mile head start; closing speed = 20 mph; time to catch = 60 ÷ 20 = 3 hours after 10 AM = 1:00 PM.

  4. What is 2/3 of 3/4 of 120?

    Answer: 60

    3/4 of 120 = 90; 2/3 of 90 = 60.

  5. A tank is 1/4 full. After adding 18 gallons it is 3/4 full. What is the tank's total capacity?

    Answer: 36 gallons

    18 gallons represents 3/4 − 1/4 = 1/2 the tank; total = 18 × 2 = 36 gallons.

  6. What is the value of 4³ − 3⁴?

    Answer: -17

    4³ = 64 and 3⁴ = 81; 64 − 81 = -17.

  7. A product costs $45 to make and is sold for $63. What is the profit margin (profit as % of selling price)?

    Answer: 28.6%

    Profit = $63 - $45 = $18; margin = $18 ÷ $63 × 100 ≈ 28.6%.
