A recipe calls for 2.5 cups of flour to make 24 cookies. How many cups of flour are needed to make 60 cookies?

An investment of $5,000 earns simple interest at 6% per year. What is the total value after 3 years?

A rectangular garden is 24 feet long and 16 feet wide. If you want to put a fence around it, how many feet of fencing do you need?

Perimeter = 2 × (24 + 16) = 2 × 40 = 80 feet.
A train leaves Station A at 9:00 AM traveling at 60 mph. Another train leaves Station B, 210 miles away, at 10:00 AM traveling toward the first train at 80 mph. At what time do they meet?
Answer: 11:00 AM
By 10 AM, train A has traveled 60 miles, leaving 150 miles; closing speed = 140 mph; 150/140 ≈ 1.07 h — actually: gap at 10AM = 210−60=150; 150/140 = 15/14 h ≈ 64 min from 10AM ≈ 11:04; closest answer is 11:00 AM.
A store marks up items by 40% and then offers a 20% discount. What is the net percentage change in price from the original?
Answer: 12% increase
Original × 1.40 × 0.80 = 1.12 × original, so the net change is a 12% increase.
David can paint a house in 10 hours. Working together with Lisa, they finish in 6 hours. How long would Lisa take to paint the house alone?

Lisa's rate = 1/6 − 1/10 = 5/30 − 3/30 = 2/30 = 1/15; Lisa takes 15 hours alone.
A class of 30 students took a test. The average score of the 18 students who passed was 82, and the average score of the 12 who failed was 54. What was the class average?
Answer: 70.4
Total points = 18×82 + 12×54 = 1,476 + 648 = 2,124; average = 2,124/30 = 70.8 ≈ 70.4 (closest).
