Some birds can fly. All penguins are birds. Which conclusion is logically valid?
Answer: Penguins might or might not be able to fly based on these premises
The premises say 'some birds' can fly, not which ones. Penguins might be in either group.
Statement: 'If a student studies hard, they will pass.' A student did NOT pass. What follows?
Answer: The student did not study hard
Contrapositive: if a student did not pass, they did not study hard.
All items in Group X are red. Item Z is not red. Which is necessarily true?
Answer: Item Z is not in Group X
If all Group X items are red and Item Z is not red, Item Z cannot be in Group X.
A survey shows: 60 people like coffee, 40 like tea, and 20 like both. How many people like coffee but NOT tea?
Answer: 40
Coffee only = total coffee minus both = 60 minus 20 = 40.
Premises: (1) All managers attend Monday meetings. (2) Sarah does not attend Monday meetings. What follows?
Answer: Sarah is not a manager
Contrapositive of premise 1: if someone does not attend Monday meetings, they are not a manager.
