CART Real-time Captioning Techniques 2

Question 1

A CART provider notices the same two words repeatedly translating as the wrong entry because they share an identical steno outline. What is this problem called?

Accepted Answer

A stroke conflict

Answer

A conflict occurs when one steno outline maps to more than one English word, which forces the software to pick one and often pick wrong.

Question 2

Which writing approach best supports high translation rates in realtime CART work?

Accepted Answer

Writing conflict-free theory

Answer

Conflict-free theory lets each outline translate to one word, which removes ambiguity on screen right away.

Question 3

During a lecture, the instructor introduces a new technical term the provider has no entry for. What is the best realtime technique?

Accepted Answer

Fingerspell it once and then define it on the fly as a brief

Answer

Defining an entry on the fly makes every later use of the term translate cleanly during the session.
