CAR - Certified Automotive Recycler Recycled Parts Quality Assurance Questions and Answers 1

Question 1

A technician is processing a front bumper cover and finds a 3-inch crack near a mounting point, which a body shop could likely repair. According to ARA parts grading guidelines, how should this part be described and categorized in the inventory system?

Accepted Answer

Grade it as 'B' or lower, and include a standardized damage code in the description specifying the crack.

Answer

The Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) guidelines require accurate grading and description of all parts. A part with repairable damage should be downgraded from 'A' grade and must have the damage clearly noted using standardized codes (e.g., a code for a crack) so the buyer, such as a body shop, knows exactly what they are purchasing.

Question 2

What is the primary purpose of the standardized Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) Damage Codes in the quality assurance process?

Accepted Answer

To provide a universal, consistent language for describing the type, location, and severity of damage on a part.

Answer

The ARA Damage Coding system was developed to create a standardized method for describing damage on recycled parts. This ensures that recyclers, collision shops, insurers, and customers all have a common understanding of a part's condition, which improves communication and reduces returns. While damage affects price and warranty, the code's primary function is descriptive standardization.

Question 3

Which of the following represents a critical quality control test performed on a recycled engine *after* it has been harvested from the vehicle but *before* it is placed into warehouse inventory?

Accepted Answer

Conducting a compression test or leak-down test on all cylinders.

Answer

A compression test or leak-down test is a fundamental diagnostic procedure to assess the internal mechanical health of an engine, checking for issues like worn piston rings or leaking valves. Performing this test before stocking the engine provides a crucial quality metric that verifies its viability and helps set customer expectations. The other options are standard processing steps, not specific quality tests of the engine's core function.

Question 4

A customer returns a recycled alternator under warranty, stating it does not charge the battery. What is the most appropriate first step for the quality assurance manager to take?

Accepted Answer

Bench test the returned alternator to verify the failure and check for signs of installation damage.

Answer

The first step in any warranty claim is to verify the defect. Bench testing the alternator will confirm if it is truly faulty, if it was damaged during installation, or if the problem might be with the customer's vehicle. This verification is essential for managing warranty costs, identifying quality issues, and preventing fraud.

Question 5

To maintain quality and prevent damage, which of the following is the BEST practice for storing harvested electronic control modules (ECMs) and other sensitive electronics?

Accepted Answer

Placed in an anti-static bag and stored in a dry, climate-controlled area.

Answer

Electronic components like ECMs are highly susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD), moisture, and extreme temperatures. The industry best practice is to place them in ESD-safe or anti-static bags and store them in a secure, climate-controlled environment to preserve their functionality.
