4 × $0.75 = $3.00 and 3 × $1.20 = $3.60, so $3.00 + $3.60 = $6.60.
A worker earns $14.50 per hour and works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. What is the worker's total weekly earnings?
Answer: $580.00
$14.50 × 8 × 5 = $580.00 per week.
A recipe calls for 2½ cups of flour to make 24 cookies. How many cups of flour are needed to make 60 cookies?
Answer: 6¼ cups
60 ÷ 24 = 2.5, and 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25 = 6¼ cups.
Tom drove 156 miles in 3 hours. At the same speed, how long will it take him to drive 364 miles?
Answer: 7 hours
Speed = 156 ÷ 3 = 52 mph; time = 364 ÷ 52 = 7 hours.
A water tank holds 480 gallons. If a pump drains 20 gallons per minute, how many minutes will it take to empty the tank completely?
Answer: 24 minutes
480 ÷ 20 = 24 minutes to empty the tank.
A class of 30 students took a test. If 18 students passed, what percentage of the class failed?
Answer: 40%
12 students failed; 12 ÷ 30 = 0.40 = 40%.
A coat originally priced at $120 is on sale for 25% off. What is the sale price?
