  1. A mixture contains salt and water in a ratio of 1:8. If you have 72 ounces of water, how many ounces of salt do you need?

    Answer: 9 ounces

    1/8 = x/72 gives x = 72/8 = 9 ounces of salt.

  2. A store sells 3 cans of soup for $4.50. At this rate, what is the cost of 10 cans?

    Answer: $15.00

    Each can costs $1.50; 10 × $1.50 = $15.00.

  3. A model airplane is built to a scale of 1:72. If the real airplane's wingspan is 36 feet, what is the model's wingspan in inches?

    Answer: 6 inches

    36 feet = 432 inches; 432 ÷ 72 = 6 inches.

  4. If 4 painters can paint a house in 6 days, how many days would it take 8 painters working at the same rate?

    Answer: 3 days

Doubling the painters halves the time: 6 ÷ 2 = 3 days (inverse proportion).

  5. A class has a student-to-teacher ratio of 18:1. If there are 6 teachers, how many students are there?

    Answer: 108 students

    18 × 6 = 108 students.

  6. A fertilizer requires 3 tablespoons per gallon of water. How many tablespoons are needed for 2.5 gallons?

    Answer: 7.5 tablespoons

    3 × 2.5 = 7.5 tablespoons.

  7. A basketball player made 15 out of 20 free throw attempts. At this ratio, how many would she make out of 60 attempts?

    Answer: 45

    15/20 = 3/4; (3/4) × 60 = 45 free throws made.
