  1. A store marks up its products by 40% above the cost price. If an item costs the store $85, what is the selling price?

    Answer: $119

    40% of $85 = $34; $85 + $34 = $119 selling price.

  2. A swimming pool holds 15,000 gallons. If the pool is currently 60% full and water fills at 250 gallons per hour, how many hours to fill it completely?

    Answer: 24 hours

    40% of 15,000 = 6,000 gallons needed; 6,000 ÷ 250 = 24 hours.

  3. Anna scored 85, 92, 78, and 95 on four tests. What score does she need on a fifth test to have an average of 88?

    Answer: 90

    Target total = 88 × 5 = 440; current total = 350; needed score = 440 − 350 = 90.

  4. A telephone plan charges $0.05 per minute for the first 100 minutes and $0.03 per minute after that. What is the cost of a 180-minute call?

    Answer: $7.40

    First 100 min: 100 × $0.05 = $5.00; next 80 min: 80 × $0.03 = $2.40; total = $7.40.

  5. A 12-ounce bottle of juice costs $1.44. A 20-ounce bottle costs $2.20. Which is the better value per ounce?

    Answer: The 20-ounce bottle

    12-oz: $1.44 ÷ 12 = $0.12/oz; 20-oz: $2.20 ÷ 20 = $0.11/oz — the 20-oz bottle is cheaper per ounce.

  6. A map uses a scale of 1 inch = 50 miles. If two cities are 3.5 inches apart on the map, what is the actual distance between them?

    Answer: 175 miles

    3.5 inches × 50 miles per inch = 175 miles.

  7. A salesperson earns a base salary of $1,500 per month plus a 5% commission on all sales. If she sells $18,000 worth of products, what is her total monthly income?

    Answer: $2,400

    Commission = 5% × $18,000 = $900; total = $1,500 + $900 = $2,400.
