Boating Certification Test Vessel Operation and Handling 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: When operating in a narrow channel, where should you position your vessel?
- In the center of the channel
- As far to the starboard side as is safe and practical (Correct answer)
- As far to the port side as possible
- On whichever side has less traffic
Correct answer: As far to the starboard side as is safe and practical
Rule 9 of the COLREGS requires vessels in a narrow channel to keep as far to the starboard (right) side as is safe and practical.
Question 2: You are approaching a dock with a strong current pushing you toward it. What is the safest technique?
- Approach at full speed to maintain steering control
- Approach at a steep angle and use reverse thrust to stop
- Approach slowly into the current so it helps slow your vessel (Correct answer)
- Approach parallel to the dock and drift in
Correct answer: Approach slowly into the current so it helps slow your vessel
Approaching into the current allows the current to act as a natural brake, giving you better speed control when docking.
Question 3: What does 'leeway' mean in vessel operation?
- Extra space kept between two vessels
- The sideways drift of a vessel caused by wind or current (Correct answer)
- The minimum safe following distance behind another boat
- The slack in an anchor line
Correct answer: The sideways drift of a vessel caused by wind or current
Leeway is the lateral (sideways) movement of a vessel caused by wind or current pushing it off its intended course.
Question 4: When backing a single-engine outboard vessel, the stern tends to swing in which direction?
- Opposite to the direction the propeller rotates
- Always to starboard regardless of throttle
- In the same direction the propeller rotates (Correct answer)
- Straight back with no lateral movement
Correct answer: In the same direction the propeller rotates
Propeller torque causes the stern of a single-engine boat to walk sideways in the same rotational direction as the propeller when in reverse.
Question 5: What is the primary purpose of trim tabs on a powerboat?
- To reduce engine vibration at high speed
- To adjust the running angle of the hull for efficiency and comfort (Correct answer)
- To prevent water from entering the bilge
- To stabilize the boat at anchor
Correct answer: To adjust the running angle of the hull for efficiency and comfort
Trim tabs are adjustable flaps at the stern that change the boat's running angle (pitch), improving fuel efficiency, speed, and ride comfort.
Question 6: A vessel is said to be 'in irons' when it:
- Has run aground on rocks
- Is stuck head-to-wind with no steerage (Correct answer)
- Has its anchor fouled on the bottom
- Is being towed by another vessel
Correct answer: Is stuck head-to-wind with no steerage
A sailboat is 'in irons' when it has turned into the wind and lost enough speed to have no steerage, leaving it stalled and unable to maneuver.
Question 7: What effect does a following sea (waves coming from behind) have on vessel handling?
- It makes steering easier and more predictable
- It can cause the vessel to yaw or broach if not managed carefully (Correct answer)
- It increases fuel efficiency significantly
- It has no effect on handling compared to calm water
Correct answer: It can cause the vessel to yaw or broach if not managed carefully
A following sea can cause a vessel to yaw (turn sideways) or broach (swing broadside to waves), which is especially dangerous for smaller boats.
