Boating Certification Test Weather and Water Conditions — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What does a rapidly falling barometer reading indicate to a boater?
- Improving weather ahead
- Approaching storm or bad weather (Correct answer)
- Calm, stable conditions
- Wind speed decreasing
Correct answer: Approaching storm or bad weather
A rapidly falling barometer indicates a drop in atmospheric pressure, which typically signals an approaching storm or deteriorating weather conditions.
Question 2: What type of cloud formation often indicates an approaching thunderstorm?
- Cirrus clouds
- Stratus clouds
- Cumulonimbus clouds (Correct answer)
- Cumulus clouds
Correct answer: Cumulonimbus clouds
Cumulonimbus clouds are tall, anvil-shaped storm clouds that are a strong indicator of thunderstorm activity.
Question 3: When caught in a thunderstorm on the water, what is the recommended action?
- Increase speed to outrun the storm
- Raise an antenna for better radio reception
- Lower the anchor and wait it out in open water
- Head to shore, get off the water, and seek shelter (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Head to shore, get off the water, and seek shelter
The safest action in a thunderstorm is to head to shore immediately, get off the water, and seek sturdy shelter away from the boat.
Question 4: What does a small-craft advisory issued by the National Weather Service mean?
- Conditions are ideal for small boats
- Wind and wave conditions may be hazardous to small vessels (Correct answer)
- Only large commercial vessels should operate
- Fog is reducing visibility below one mile
Correct answer: Wind and wave conditions may be hazardous to small vessels
A small-craft advisory warns that wind and/or sea conditions may be hazardous to small boats and those operating them should use caution.
Question 5: How does alcohol consumption affect a boater's response to cold water immersion?
- It has no effect on cold water survival
- It warms the body and improves survival chances
- It accelerates heat loss and impairs judgment, reducing survival time (Correct answer)
- It slows heart rate and helps conserve warmth
Correct answer: It accelerates heat loss and impairs judgment, reducing survival time
Alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate, which increases heat loss from the body and significantly reduces survival time in cold water while also impairing judgment.
Question 6: What is hypothermia and at what water temperature does it become a serious risk for boaters?
- Overheating; above 90°F
- Abnormal drop in body temperature; water below 70°F (Correct answer)
- Sunstroke; air temperatures above 95°F
- Dehydration; any water temperature
Correct answer: Abnormal drop in body temperature; water below 70°F
Hypothermia is a dangerous drop in core body temperature, and water below 70°F can cause it quickly since water conducts heat away from the body much faster than air.
