- Two-stage format confirmed by the publisher: the bksb Initial Assessment "provides a tool for tutors to identify a learner's working level", and the Diagnostic Assessment "then provides an analysis of a learner's strengths and weaknesses". Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills exams themselves are sat separately with an awarding body, online or on paper, under exam conditions; all Entry Level exams are paper-based. (source)

- Apprenticeship funding rules 2025–26 (Version 3, 1 January 2026): providers must use the initial assessment to record whether a 19+ apprentice will study English/maths (para 43–44); 19+ apprentices who opt out do not need to sit the diagnostic portion (para 44.1); those who opt in start tuition one level above their assessed level and need not achieve it to pass gateway (para 51.1). Minimum apprenticeship duration fell from 12 to 8 months for starts from 1 August 2025 (para 73). (source)

Adult Skills Fund rules 2025–26 fully fund Functional Skills English and maths from Entry to Level 2 for eligible adults aged 19+ without a grade 4/C, and providers "must not make compulsory charges" for fully funded aims; they must also "carry out a thorough initial assessment to determine an individual's current level" (this is where a bksb-type assessment sits). Free BKSB Practice Test Online: How to Use It Before Your Assessment
The bksb Initial Assessment is adaptive, untimed and cannot be failed, so the goal of practising online beforehand is not to memorise answers but to make sure the level it places you at reflects what you can actually do. Work through the English and maths questions on this page once at your own pace, read the explanation for every question you miss, and then retake the set. Because the real assessment moves between Entry Level 1 and Level 2 based on your responses, rushing or guessing early questions can push you towards a lower starting level and a longer learning plan than you need.
Focus your practice on the areas the diagnostic stage breaks down: for maths, fractions, percentages, units of measure and reading charts and tables; for English, reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
