  1. A court processes 240 cases per month. If the backlog is 1,440 cases, how many months will it take to clear the backlog (assuming no new cases)?

    Answer: 6 months

    1,440 ÷ 240 = 6 months to clear the backlog.

  2. Three law partners share profits equally. In Q1 the firm earned $180,000 and in Q2 it earned $240,000. How much did each partner receive in total across both quarters?

    Answer: $140,000

    Total = 180,000 + 240,000 = 420,000; each partner receives 420,000 ÷ 3 = $140,000.

  3. A legal database subscription costs $480 per year. If the price rises by 15%, what will the new annual cost be?

    Answer: $552

    480 × 1.15 = $552.

  4. Out of 150 bar exam candidates, 18 failed. What percentage passed?

    Answer: 88%

    Passed = 150 − 18 = 132; percentage = (132 / 150) × 100 = 88%.

  5. A law firm uses 3,600 sheets of paper per week. Paper comes in reams of 500 sheets. How many complete reams are used per week?

    Answer: 7 reams

    3,600 ÷ 500 = 7.2, so 7 complete reams are used (with a partial 8th ream).

  6. A client owes $8,500. They pay $2,000 immediately and agree to pay the rest in 5 equal instalments. What is each instalment?

    Answer: $1,300

    Remaining balance = 8,500 − 2,000 = 6,500; each instalment = 6,500 ÷ 5 = $1,300.
