  1. A snail climbs 3 feet up a 10-foot pole each day but slides back 2 feet each night. On which day does the snail reach the top?

    Answer: Day 8

Net gain is 1 ft/day; after 7 days the snail is at 7 ft, then on Day 8 it climbs 3 more to reach 10 ft.

  2. If the sum of five consecutive even integers is 110, what is the largest of the five integers?

    Answer: 26

    Let n, n+2, n+4, n+6, n+8; sum = 5n + 20 = 110; n = 18; largest = 26.

  3. A map has a scale of 1 inch = 25 miles. Two cities are 3.6 inches apart on the map. What is the actual distance?

    Answer: 90 miles

    3.6 × 25 = 90 miles.

  4. Which of the following is an example of working backwards as a problem-solving strategy?

Answer: Starting from the desired answer to find the starting conditions

Working backwards means starting from the goal state and reversing steps to find initial conditions.

  5. A coin is flipped 3 times. What is the probability of getting exactly 2 heads?

    Answer: 3/8

    C(3,2) × (1/2)³ = 3 × 1/8 = 3/8.

  6. A rectangle has a perimeter of 36 and an area of 80. What are its dimensions?

    Answer: 8 and 10

    2(l + w) = 36 gives l + w = 18; l × w = 80; solving gives l = 8 and w = 10.

  7. A committee of 3 is chosen from 7 people. How many different committees are possible?

    Answer: 35

    C(7,3) = 7! / (3! × 4!) = 35.
