    Answer: 58

    x² + y² = (x+y)² − 2xy = 100 − 42 = 58.

    Answer: 25%

    CP = 0.8 × MP; profit% = (MP − 0.8MP) / 0.8MP × 100 = 0.2/0.8 × 100 = 25%.

  3. A bank charges 2% per month on a credit card balance. What is the approximate annual interest rate (compounded monthly)?

    Answer: 26.8%

    EAR = (1.02)^12 − 1 ≈ 1.2682 − 1 = 26.82% ≈ 26.8%.

  4. Two trains 120 m and 180 m long travel towards each other at 60 km/h and 90 km/h. How long do they take to cross each other?

    Answer: 7.2 seconds

    Relative speed = 150 km/h = 41.67 m/s; time = 300/41.67 ≈ 7.2 seconds.

  5. What is 35% of 480?

    Answer: 168

    35% of 480 = 0.35 × 480 = 168.

  6. The mean of 5 numbers is 18. If one number is excluded the mean becomes 16. What is the excluded number?

    Answer: 26

    Total = 5×18 = 90; remaining 4 total = 4×16 = 64; excluded = 90 − 64 = 26.

  7. A bag contains 5 red, 4 blue, and 3 green balls. One ball is drawn at random. What is the probability it is NOT red?

    Answer: 7/12

    Non-red balls = 4 + 3 = 7; probability = 7/12.
