What is the purpose of a torque converter in an automatic transmission?
Answer: Multiply engine torque and allow the engine to idle while the vehicle is stopped
The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling that multiplies torque at low speeds and allows the engine to idle without stalling when the vehicle is stationary.
What does the torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup do?
Answer: Creates a direct mechanical connection between engine and transmission to improve fuel efficiency
When locked, the TCC bypasses the fluid coupling and creates a direct mechanical link, eliminating slip and improving fuel economy at cruise speeds.
Which component in a manual transmission synchronizes gear speeds before engagement?
Answer: Synchronizer (synchro ring)
Synchronizer rings use friction to match the speed of the rotating gear to the shaft speed before the gear is fully engaged, enabling smooth shifts.
What causes a manual transmission to 'pop out of gear'?
Answer: Worn detent springs or shift forks allowing the collar to back off under load
Worn detent springs, shift fork wear, or worn engagement teeth allow the sliding collar to disengage under torque, causing the transmission to pop out of gear.
What type of differential allows wheels to rotate at different speeds while cornering?
Answer: Open differential
An open differential uses a set of spider gears to allow the inside and outside wheels to rotate at different speeds during turns.
What is the function of the clutch pressure plate?
Answer: Apply clamping force to the clutch disc against the flywheel
The pressure plate uses spring force to clamp the clutch disc against the flywheel, transmitting engine torque to the transmission input shaft.
