What causes transmission fluid to turn dark brown or black with a burnt smell?
Answer: Overheating causing fluid breakdown and clutch material contamination
Overheated automatic transmission fluid breaks down chemically and becomes contaminated with burnt clutch and band friction material, turning dark and smelling burnt.
What is the purpose of a driveshaft slip yoke?
Answer: Accommodate changes in driveshaft length as the suspension moves up and down
The slip yoke slides in and out of the transmission tail shaft to compensate for driveshaft length changes as the rear axle moves through suspension travel.
What does a transmission solenoid do in an electronically controlled automatic transmission?
Answer: Convert electrical signals from the TCM into hydraulic actions that control gear changes
Transmission solenoids are electro-hydraulic valves that open and close hydraulic circuits on command from the TCM to engage specific clutch packs for each gear.
What is gear ratio and how does it affect vehicle performance?
Answer: The ratio of input shaft speed to output shaft speed, determining torque multiplication and speed
Gear ratio is the relationship between input and output shaft speeds; lower ratios (numerically higher) multiply torque for acceleration while higher ratios (lower numbers) reduce torque for efficiency.
What is the function of transmission bands in an automatic transmission?
Answer: Wrap around drum components to hold them stationary, enabling specific gear engagements
Transmission bands are friction devices that wrap around rotating drums and are applied hydraulically to hold them stationary, which is necessary for certain gear combinations.
What causes shudder during torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup engagement?
Answer: Worn or glazed TCC friction material or contaminated fluid causing inconsistent engagement
TCC shudder occurs when the lockup clutch engages unevenly due to worn friction material, contaminated fluid, or incorrect fluid type, causing a rapid engage-slip-engage cycle.
