If you have a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) and want to become a licensed social worker (LBSW/LSW in the states that license at this level), you will need to pass the ASWB Bachelors exam. Since August 3, 2026 the exam has 122 questions, a 4-hour limit, and three content areas. Here is how to get prepared for the 2026 test.
Last verified: September 18, 2026 against the Association of Social Work Boards (aswb.org) and the ASWB Examination Guidebook, 08/2026 edition.
ASWB requires a 90-day wait between attempts at the Bachelors exam, and each retake means registering again and paying the full US$230 fee. If you scored within 10 correct answers of passing, you can ask your licensing board to approve a waiver of the 90-day wait. Some boards also cap the number of attempts, so check your state's rule.
The social work license exams used to evaluate a social worker's ability to practice safely and ethically are developed and maintained by ASWB. The Bachelors exam is the entry-level category for BSW graduates; the other four categories are Associate, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical.
In 2025, the ASWB Bachelors exam had a 70.4% first-time pass rate across 2,741 exams administered, the second-lowest of the five categories (only Advanced Generalist was lower at 65.0%).
Purchase ASWB's $85 online practice test. It is worthwhile because it uses retired exam questions in the real 122-question, 4-hour format and shows you how you would be scored. The ASWB Examination Guidebook (08/2026 edition) is a free PDF that contains the full content outline for the exam, so download it before you start studying.

If you're going to take the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam, you'll need a good study guide. You can find free resources online, but there are also paid materials to help you prepare. In addition to your study guide, you will also need an approved practice test.
The best social work test prep guides break subject matter into sections that are easy to navigate. These guides also contain sample questions, as well as strategies to use during the exam. They can be customized to suit your needs.
The ASWB Bachelors exam is designed to measure the knowledge you have gained during your BSW education. Since August 3, 2026 it is a four-hour test with 122 multiple choice questions, 110 of which are scored and 12 of which are unscored pretest items; it is delivered in two 61-question sections of two hours each. The exam is scored on a pass/fail basis, and the passing score generally falls between 66 and 78 correct answers out of the 110 scored questions, depending on the form you receive.
The 2026 Bachelors exam covers three content areas: Values and Ethics (35%), Assessment and Planning (33%), and Intervention and Practice (32%). The ASWB exams are administered on computer at Pearson VUE test centers. There are five exam categories in total: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. Each category covers the same three content areas, but the questions are written for the level of practice being licensed, so a Bachelors candidate is tested on generalist BSW-level practice rather than clinical diagnosis.
If you want more targeted practice, the aswb practice questions page covers the same material with additional questions and explanations.

Answer: C. encourage disclosure so that interventions can quickly be put into place
When a social worker suspects domestic abuse based on observed signs and client information, their primary ethical responsibility is to address the potential danger. Encouraging disclosure creates an opportunity for the client to share their experience, which is the crucial first step in assessing the situation, ensuring safety, and implementing appropriate interventions and support. Waiting for disclosure or making unofficial notes delays necessary action and potentially leaves the client at further risk.
