ASHRAE Technical Specifications 2

Question 1

A specification requires air filters rated per ASHRAE Standard 52.2. Which rating metric does that standard produce?

Accepted Answer

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value)

Answer

ASHRAE 52.2 tests particle-size removal efficiency and reports the result as a MERV of 1 to 16.

Question 2

Under the ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation Rate Procedure, the breathing-zone outdoor airflow (Vbz) combines which two components?

Accepted Answer

A per-person rate (Rp) and a per-floor-area rate (Ra)

Answer

Vbz = Rp × Pz + Ra × Az, so it accounts for both occupant-related and building-related contaminants.

Question 3

Which ASHRAE standard is the Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems?

Accepted Answer

Standard 15

Answer

ASHRAE 15 covers the safe design, construction, installation and operation of refrigeration systems.

Question 4

Under ASHRAE Standard 34, what does refrigerant safety group A2L mean?

Accepted Answer

Lower toxicity, lower flammability (mildly flammable)

Answer

'A' means lower toxicity, and '2L' is the mildly flammable subclass with a burning velocity of 10 cm/s or less.

Question 5

ASHRAE Standard 55 commonly defines an acceptable thermal environment as one with a predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) below what value?

Accepted Answer

10%

Answer

A PMV between -0.5 and +0.5 corresponds to a PPD under 10%, which is the Standard 55 comfort criterion.
