Answer: 64 minutes
Rate = 40/5 = 8 min/mile; 8 × 8 = 64 minutes.
A repair crew fixes equipment at a rate of 6 items per day. How many days to repair 54 items if a second crew joins after 3 days, also fixing 6 items per day?
Answer: 7 days
First 3 days: 1 crew × 6 × 3 = 18 items; remaining = 36; with 2 crews at 12/day: 36 ÷ 12 = 3 more days; total = 6 days.
A barracks stores 480 rifles. If 1/3 are sent for maintenance and 1/4 of the remainder are issued to troops, how many rifles remain?
Answer: 240
After maintenance: 480 − 160 = 320; issued: 320 × 1/4 = 80; remaining: 320 − 80 = 240.
If a soldier's pack weighs 65 pounds and regulations state the pack must not exceed 40% of a soldier's body weight, what is the minimum body weight allowed?
Answer: 162.5 lbs

A military base has an electricity bill of $18,000 per month. If consumption is reduced by 15%, what is the new monthly bill?
Answer: $15,300
15% of $18,000 = $2,700; $18,000 − $2,700 = $15,300.
A vehicle uses 1 gallon of fuel for every 18 miles. How many gallons are needed for a 270-mile mission?
Answer: 15
270 ÷ 18 = 15 gallons.
A unit of 150 soldiers needs new boots. Boots cost $85 per pair. If the budget is $11,000, how many soldiers will go without boots?
Answer: 21
