ADF Officer Selection Board and Leadership Assessment

Question 1

What is the main purpose of the ADF Officer Selection Board (OSB)?

Accepted Answer

To judge whether an applicant has the leadership potential, motivation and suitability to train as an officer

Answer

The OSB is a panel assessment for officer applicants. It looks at leadership potential, motivation, communication, knowledge of the chosen service and role, and overall suitability for officer training.

Question 2

Which of the following are the ADF's official values?

Accepted Answer

Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity, Excellence

Answer

The ADF's single set of values is Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence. Officer candidates are expected to know these values and give examples of how they have shown them.

Question 3

An OSB panel member asks, 'Why do you want to be an officer rather than enlist?' Which answer best shows suitability?

Accepted Answer

I want to lead and develop a team, take responsibility for decisions and their outcomes, and I have built those skills through specific experiences

Answer

Panels look for genuine motivation to lead and take responsibility, backed by real examples. Answers about money, outside pressure or uncertainty suggest weak motivation or a poor understanding of the officer role.

Question 4

During a group leadership task, your team's plan is clearly failing and time is running out. What is the most effective leadership response?

Accepted Answer

Quickly reassess, ask the team for input, make a clear decision on a new approach and tell everyone what their role is

Answer

Good leaders adapt when a plan fails. They reassess quickly, draw on the team's ideas, decide clearly and communicate it. Assessors watch how candidates handle setbacks, not just whether the task gets finished.

Question 5

Why might OSB panel members ask about current events or the ADF's role in Australian and regional affairs?

Accepted Answer

To see whether the applicant understands the organisation they want to lead in and the wider strategic context

Answer

Officers need awareness of the ADF's purpose, recent operations and Australia's strategic environment. These questions show whether the applicant has researched the role and understands the setting they will work in. They are not about personal politics.
