  1. From a point on the ground 50 ft from a tree, the angle of elevation to the top is 40°. How tall is the tree (nearest foot)?

    Answer: 42 ft

    Height = 50 · tan(40°) ≈ 50 · 0.839 ≈ 42 ft.

  2. What is the value of sin(0°)?

    Answer: 0

    The sine of 0° is 0.

  3. If cos(θ) = 0.6 and θ is acute, what is tan(θ)?

    Answer: 4/3

    With cos = 3/5, sin = 4/5, so tan = sin/cos = 4/3.

  4. Using the law of cosines, find side c when a = 5, b = 7, and angle C = 60°.

    Answer: √39

    c² = 25 + 49 − 2·5·7·cos60° = 74 − 35 = 39, so c = √39.

  5. What is the range of the function y = cos(x)?

    Answer: [-1, 1]

    Cosine values always stay between −1 and 1 inclusive.

  6. Which of these is coterminal with a 30° angle?

    Answer: 390°

    Adding 360° to 30° gives 390°, a coterminal angle.

  7. What is csc(30°)?

    Answer: 2

    Cosecant is 1/sin; since sin(30°) = 1/2, csc(30°) = 2.
