An odd one out question shows four figures. Three have a small shape inside a larger version of a different shape. One has a small shape inside a larger version of the same shape. Which rule identifies the odd one out?
Answer: The odd one has matching inner and outer shapes
In three figures, the inner and outer shapes are different (e.g., circle inside a square). The odd one out has matching shapes (e.g., circle inside a circle).
A sequence shows shapes alternating between shaded and unshaded, while also rotating 90 degrees each time. If Figure 1 is an unshaded upward-pointing arrow, what is Figure 4?
Answer: Unshaded left-pointing arrow
Figure 1: unshaded, up. Figure 2: shaded, right (90° CW). Figure 3: unshaded, down. Figure 4: shaded, left. Wait — alternating means F1=unshaded, F2=shaded, F3=unshaded, F4=shaded. And rotating 90° CW: up→right→down→left. So Figure 4 is shaded, pointing left.
A coded figure shows: square = 2 points, triangle = 3 points, circle = 1 point. A figure contains 3 squares, 2 triangles, and 5 circles. What is the total score?
Answer: 17
3 squares × 2 = 6, 2 triangles × 3 = 6, 5 circles × 1 = 5. Total = 6 + 6 + 5 = 17 points.
In a fold-and-punch question, a square piece of paper is folded in half vertically, then a hole is punched in the top-right corner. When unfolded, where are the holes?
Answer: Top-left and top-right
When folded vertically in half, the right side folds onto the left. A hole punched in the top-right goes through both layers, creating holes in both the top-left and top-right when unfolded.
A 3×3 grid has a pattern: the diagonal from top-left to bottom-right is filled with stars. All other cells are empty. If the grid is rotated 90 degrees clockwise, which diagonal now has stars?
Answer: Top-right to bottom-left
When a grid is rotated 90 degrees clockwise, the main diagonal (top-left to bottom-right) becomes the anti-diagonal (top-right to bottom-left).
A series of figures increases in complexity. Figure 1: one horizontal line. Figure 2: one horizontal + one vertical line (forming a cross). Figure 3: cross + one diagonal. What does Figure 5 look like?
Answer: A star with 5 lines through the centre
Each figure adds one line through the centre. Figure 1: 1 line, Figure 2: 2 lines, Figure 3: 3 lines, Figure 4: 4 lines, Figure 5: 5 lines = a star shape with 5 lines radiating from the centre.
