  1. Arrange the following values in ascending order (smallest to largest): 0.45, 7/20, 40%.

    Answer: 7/20, 40%, 0.45

To compare the values, first convert them all to a common format. Using decimals is often easiest. 7/20 is equivalent to 35/100, which is 0.35. 40% is equivalent to 40/100, which is 0.40. The value 0.45 is already a decimal. Ordering the decimals 0.35, 0.40, and 0.45 from smallest to largest corresponds to the original values in the order: 7/20, 40%, 0.45.

  2. A coat originally priced at £80 is in a sale with a 35% discount. What is the sale price of the coat?

    Answer: £52

    First, calculate the value of the discount: 35% of £80. A simple way is to find 10% (£8) and 5% (£4). Then, 35% is (3 x 10%) + 5% = (3 x £8) + £4 = £24 + £4 = £28. The sale price is the original price minus the discount: £80 - £28 = £52.

  3. A bottle contains 1.5 litres of orange squash. A child drinks 1/3 of it. How much squash is left in the bottle, in millilitres?

    Answer: 1000 ml

First, convert the total volume to millilitres: 1.5 litres = 1.5 x 1000 = 1500 ml. Next, calculate the amount the child drinks: 1/3 of 1500 ml is 1500 ÷ 3 = 500 ml. To find out how much is left, subtract the amount drunk from the original amount: 1500 ml - 500 ml = 1000 ml.

  4. Which of the following values is the largest?

    Answer: 7/8

    To compare the values, convert them all to decimals. 0.85 is already a decimal. 83% is 0.83. 7/8 is equivalent to 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875. 4/5 is equivalent to 4 ÷ 5 = 0.80. Comparing the decimals (0.850, 0.830, 0.875, 0.800), the largest value is 0.875, which is 7/8.

  5. A train ticket from London to Manchester costs £60. The price is set to increase by 5%. What will the new price of the ticket be?

    Answer: £63.00

First, find the value of the 5% increase. 10% of £60 is £6, so 5% is half of that, which is £3. The new price is the original price plus the increase: £60 + £3 = £63.00.

  6. In a class of 30 pupils, 1/5 have school dinners. Of the remaining pupils, 50% bring a packed lunch from home. The rest of the pupils go home for lunch. How many pupils go home for lunch?

    Answer: 12

Step 1: Calculate the number of pupils having school dinners: (1/5) * 30 = 6 pupils. Step 2: Find the number of remaining pupils: 30 - 6 = 24 pupils. Step 3: Calculate the number of pupils who bring a packed lunch: 50% of 24 is (50/100) * 24 = 12 pupils. Step 4: The pupils who go home for lunch are the ones remaining after accounting for packed lunches: 24 - 12 = 12 pupils.
