# TABE Applied Math Practice Test 3

#### Carpet costs $3 per square yard. The room that will be carpeted is 12 feet x 18 feet. How much will the carpet cost?

12 feet x 18 feet is equivalent to 4 yards x 6 yards = 24 sq yards. 24 square yards x $3/sq yard = $72. Remember 3 feet = 1 yard, but 9 sq feet = 1 sq yard.

#### The number 8835 was rounded by Clair to the nearest hundred. This amount was rounded to the nearest thousand by Steve. What made the two rounded numbers different from one another?

#### A toll is $2 for a car and the driver and 75 cent for each additional passenger. If the toll comes to $4.25, how many total people are in the car?

The toll of $4.25 includes $2 for the driver/car. So $2.25 ($4.25-$2) is left for the passengers. $2.25/0.75 = 3 passengers, so the total amount of people in the car is 1 driver and 3 passengers.

#### A scale on a map says that 1 inch represents 60 miles. If the distance between two points on the map is 2 1/2 inches, how many miles are between the two points?

2 1/2 x 60 = 150

#### A contractor works four jobs and makes $563, $612, $890, and $392 in one month. How much did the contractor make on these four projects, on average?

#### A plane left San Francisco at 6:15 pm PST and arrived in Philadelphia at 2:45 am EST. How long was the flight?

First, convert 6:15 PST to 9:15 EST. The flight then took from 9:15 pm EST to 2:45 am EST. That means that the flight took 5 1/2 hours

#### A car has a 15 gallon gas tank. If a car gets 32 miles per gallon and travels 384 miles, how much gas will be left in the tank?

The car will have used 12 gallons (384 miles/32 gallons). Therefore, there will be 3 gallons left in the tank (15 gallons - 3 gallons)

#### A stack of bricks is 3 1/2 feet high. If each brick is 1 3/4 inches high, how many bricks are in the stack?

3 1/2 feet x 12 in/ft= 42 inches. 42 inches/1.75 inches = 24 bricks

#### A man's hourly wage increased from $12.50 to $13.50. What percent raise did he get?

To find the percent of increase, subtract the second number from the original/first number (13.5-12.5=1.0) and divide that result by the original number (1/12.5=0.08=8%)

#### Which of the following best sums up the right triangle's sides?

#### If you pay $22.90 for a DVD that includes a 7% sales tax, what is the price of the DVD before the sales tax?

If y represents the price of the DVD before the tax. Then price with tax would be y + 0.07y = $22.90. Therefore 1.07y=22.90, or y= 22.90/1.07=$21.40. Be careful not to just take 7% of $22.90 and subtract. That is incorrect.

#### A book regularly sells for $28. If the book is on sale for "20% off", how much is the sales price of the book?

20% of $28 = 28x0.2=$5.60. The sales price is then $28-$5.6 = $22.40

#### A product originally costs $125. If the product goes on sale for 20% off, and then goes on sale for an additional 30% off, what is the price of the product?

You need to apply the discounts successively not just add the discounts. So $125 x 80% = $100 (price after original 20% discount). $100 x 70% = $70 the price after the 2nd 30% discount.
