The ISEE, or “Independent School Entrance Exam,” evaluates a student’s abilities and compares them to those of other students in the same grade. It’s one way of determining an applicant’s qualifications for admission to high-achieving private schools.

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is a standardized test composed of a set of multiple-choice questions and a written test. It is used for entry to private elementary and secondary schools. You’ll have to take this test if you want to attend an elite private middle or high school.

Most schools will accept students with a score of 5 or higher, while some elite private schools require applicants to have an ISEE exam score of 7 or above.

All three ISEE levels can be done online or in the conventional pencil/paper format. The entire exam lasts a little shorter than three hours, in which you will be working on five various sections. The writing sample is unscored. The remaining four portions of the test will be graded, and the performance sheet will display the scaled scores.

Depending on the test delivery method, score results are accessible between 2 and 10 days after the test.

The ISEE test can be taken either online or on paper, and each has its own set of criteria. Both types of tests need you to bring a verification letter as well as the student’s identity. A library card, a birth certificate, a social security card, a school report card, a school ID, or a passport or green card can all be used as identification. Students applying to grades 6–8 take the Middle Level ISEE. The Middle Level ISEE is given both on paper and on the computer.

To do well on the ISEE, you must prepare thoroughly. The easiest method to do well on the ISEE exam is to plan ahead of time and stick to it. Before taking the test, you should prepare by practicing ISEE practice test and studying various questions related to each test section.

The SSAT’s verbal component is harder than the ISEE’s, but the ISEE’s math section is harder. The passages on the SSAT include both nonfiction and fiction in the reading comprehension component, but the ISEE exclusively examines nonfiction.

Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and an Essay written by the student in his or her own handwriting in response to a specific writing topic are the five sections that make up the ISEE (in sequence of testing).

• Verbal Reasoning — The Verbal Reasoning part consists of 40 questions with a 20-minute time limit.
• Quantitative Reasoning – There are 37 questions in this portion that must be answered in 35 minutes.
• Reading Comprehension – There are 36 questions in the Reading Comprehension portion, with a time limit of 35 minutes.

The ISEE allows students to bring a basic calculator with them. There are no graphing calculators allowed.

The Middle Level and Upper Level tests are both 2 hours and 40 minutes long and include the same amount of questions.

Students may take the ISEE three times in a 12-month admission cycle, once in each of the three testing seasons.

Always consider the “stanine” score while evaluating ISEE results. You may get a rough estimate of this score by taking the percentage of questions answered correctly on any section and translating the figure to the stanine score in the tens place.

Reading is the most effective approach to expand your vocabulary. You don’t have to read a boring textbook, but you should choose an intriguing book that is appropriate for your grade.

Set a weekly reading target of a specified number of pages or minutes. Your vocabulary and reading comprehension will improve if you read a fascinating but demanding material on a regular basis.

The ISEE is a difficult test, with each level—Lower, Middle, and Upper—designed to push students across different grade levels. As a result, there will be some content on the test that you will not be expected to know. Keep in mind that you will only be judged against students in your grade level.

The ISEE essay is not graded, and the schools that review it are unlikely to give it a grade.

The ISEE Upper Level lasts 2 hours and 40 minutes, not including two breaks, and is for students applying to grades 9-12.
