The ETS GRE, or also called Graduate Record Examination, is an admission test that is utilized by graduate schools and business schools. It determines whether the applicant has academic readiness for the said graduate programs. Furthermore, it is divided into 2 types: GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. Both of these graduate entrance exams can either be taken as computer-delivered tests or paper-delivered tests.

The GRE General test is also offered at Prometric test centers. There are additional testing locations outside of the Prometric on specific dates. You need to schedule your GRE on a date that’s convenient since appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

When should I take the GRE? 

The computer-delivered GRE General Test is offered all year round. That’s why if you want to make sure that your scores will be given to you in time, you need to schedule your GRE dates conveniently. It must be before your application deadlines. Most score reports will be given to you approximately 10 to 15 days after your test date.

For the paper-delivered GRE General Test, it is offered up to 3 times per year. In areas of the world wherein, computer-delivered testing is not offered, it is available up to 2 times per year.

When should I take the GRE exam?

The GRE Subject Tests can be taken 3 times a year. You can take them in the months of September, October, and April. You just need to schedule the GRE test date that suits you.

Is the GRE General Test mandatory for the GRE subject?

It depends on the graduate program you are entering. But, generally, most of them require the GRE General Test. The GRE General Test is different from the GRE Subject Test. The former is an aptitude test that assesses your skills in quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing.

The latter will determine your strength in a particular subject area. Not all of the universities will require the general test. Since both exams are different from each other, you can take them independently.

How many times can I reschedule the GRE exam date?

Computer-delivered Test

You must reschedule your GRE General Test not later than 4 days before the test date. Otherwise, your full test fee will be forfeited. You cannot also reschedule beyond 1 year of your original appointment date. 

If you are taking the exam in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada, you can reschedule your GRE test registration online using your ETS Account. You can also contact Prometric Service by phone at 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-473-2255.

On the other hand, if you are in Mainland China, you can reschedule online using your NEEA account. For Hong Kong and Taiwan, China, and Korea, you can reschedule it online or by contacting GRE Services. And for all other locations, you can reschedule it using your ETS Account.

Paper-delivered Test

The GRE tests must be rescheduled no later than 4 days before the test date. The fee for rescheduling your test registration is U.S. $50. Also, you can reschedule in the same testing year. 

Furthermore, there are 2 ways in which you can reschedule: online or contacting GRE Services. You must first sign up for your GRE and then log in to your ETS Account so you can change your schedule online. You can also contact GRE services by phone, fax, or mail.

Is there law schools that accept GRE?

Yes. As of May 2022, GRE scores are accepted by 26 law schools. These schools have referenced studies that demonstrate GRE performance is a good indicator of first-year law school grades for their students.

What are GRE accommodations?

GRE accommodations are offered by ETS, the GRE’s official test-maker, for test-takers with special needs. As a result, you may be eligible for more time, braille versions of the test, ergonomic keyboards, and other accommodations.
