What does the GGST exam measure?

The Global General Service Test (GGST) is a United Nations assessment measuring candidates' abilities in English or French communication, numerical reasoning, and basic computing skills. It is used to evaluate applicants for General Service category positions across UN Secretariat duty stations worldwide, ensuring candidates meet baseline competencies for administrative and support roles.

What is the format of the GGST test?

The GGST is a computer-based test delivered in a proctored environment, typically lasting around 2 hours. It contains multiple-choice and task-based questions divided into three sections: verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and computing skills. Candidates must complete all sections in one sitting, with each section timed separately.

How many questions are on the GGST exam?

The GGST contains approximately 75-100 questions distributed across its three core sections. The verbal reasoning section includes roughly 30 questions, numerical reasoning has about 25 questions, and the computing skills portion covers around 20-25 questions. Exact counts vary slightly between test versions administered by the UN.

What is the passing score for the GGST?

Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70 percent on each of the three GGST sections to pass. Failing any single section results in an overall fail, regardless of performance on the other two. Scores remain valid for future UN General Service applications once a candidate successfully passes.

What topics are covered on the GGST?

The GGST covers verbal reasoning (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension), numerical reasoning (arithmetic, percentages, ratios, data interpretation), and computing skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, internet basics, and file management). Questions reflect everyday workplace scenarios encountered in UN administrative positions.

Who is eligible to take the GGST?

The GGST is open to candidates applying for General Service positions within the United Nations system. Applicants must typically hold a high school diploma, demonstrate fluency in English or French, and meet the specific requirements listed in the UN job posting. There is no age limit, but candidates must have legal work authorization.

How do I register for the GGST exam?

Candidates cannot register directly for the GGST. Instead, they apply for UN General Service positions through the official Inspira careers portal at careers.un.org. Qualified applicants receive an invitation email with GGST testing instructions, including the date, location, and login credentials for the assessment platform.

What are the best tips to prepare for the GGST?

Practice timed multiple-choice questions in verbal and numerical reasoning to build speed and accuracy. Review basic Microsoft Office functions, especially Excel formulas and Word formatting. Take full-length practice tests to simulate exam conditions, and brush up on grammar rules, percentages, and data chart interpretation before test day.
