PA DMV Safe Driving Practices — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is the best way to handle driving in foggy conditions?
- Use your high-beam headlights
- Drive at your normal speed
- Use your low-beam headlights and increase your following distance (Correct answer)
- Turn on your hazard lights
Correct answer: Use your low-beam headlights and increase your following distance
When driving in foggy conditions, it is crucial to use your low-beam headlights, as high beams reflect off the fog and reduce visibility further. Additionally, increasing your following distance provides more time to react to sudden stops or hazards ahead. These measures significantly enhance safety in reduced visibility.
Question 2: What should you do if your vehicle starts to skid on a slippery road?
- Steer sharply in the opposite direction of the skid
- Apply the brakes hard to stop the skid
- Steer in the direction you want to go and gently ease off the gas (Correct answer)
- Turn off the engine to regain control
Correct answer: Steer in the direction you want to go and gently ease off the gas
If your vehicle starts to skid, the correct action is to steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Simultaneously, gently ease off the accelerator and avoid braking harshly, as this can worsen the skid by transferring weight abruptly. This technique helps regain control and straighten the vehicle.
Question 3: How should you handle a situation where another driver is tailgating you?
- Speed up to get away from them
- Slam on your brakes to make them back off
- Change lanes and let them pass if it is safe (Correct answer)
- Ignore them and maintain your speed
Correct answer: Change lanes and let them pass if it is safe
When another driver is tailgating, the safest course of action is to create space by allowing them to pass. Changing lanes when it is safe to do so, or gently reducing your speed to encourage them to pass, helps avoid a potential rear-end collision. This reduces the risk and stress associated with close following.
Question 4: What is the recommended action when approaching a railway crossing with no signals or signs?
- Speed up to cross quickly
- Stop and check both directions before crossing (Correct answer)
- Proceed without stopping if you don’t see a train
- Honk your horn to alert any trains
Correct answer: Stop and check both directions before crossing
When approaching an unmarked railway crossing, drivers must always assume a train could be approaching. The recommended action is to stop, look, and listen in both directions for any signs of an oncoming train before proceeding cautiously. This critical safety measure prevents potentially catastrophic collisions at crossings without signals or gates.
Question 5: What should you do when driving on a highway and you see an emergency vehicle with flashing lights behind you?
- Continue driving at the same speed
- Move to the right side of the road and stop if possible (Correct answer)
- Speed up to clear the lane
- Pull over to the left side of the road
Correct answer: Move to the right side of the road and stop if possible
When an emergency vehicle with flashing lights approaches from behind, drivers are legally required to yield the right-of-way. This means moving to the nearest edge of the roadway, typically the right side, and stopping until the emergency vehicle has safely passed. This action allows emergency responders to reach their destination quickly and safely.
