Question 1: There are how many different kinds of instrument handles or ends?
- one
- two (Correct answer)
- three
- four
Correct answer: two
Dental instruments are typically designed with two working ends or a single working end and a handle. This dual-ended design allows for greater versatility and efficiency, as a single instrument can perform multiple functions or access different areas of the mouth without needing to switch tools. The two ends often feature different shapes, sizes, or angles to adapt to various anatomical structures and procedural requirements.
Question 2: What portion of the dental tool actually touches the patient?
- Double-end
- Shank-end
- Working-end (Correct answer)
- Flat-end
Correct answer: Working-end
The working-end is the specific part of a dental instrument that performs the intended function, such as scaling, exploring, or reflecting. It is meticulously designed with specific shapes, angles, and sharpness to effectively interact with oral tissues and structures. This direct contact allows the clinician to achieve diagnostic or therapeutic objectives safely and precisely.
Question 3: What three types of dental mirrors are there?
- Front surface, back surface, and marginal surface
- Front surface, mid surface, and back surface
- Front surface, back surface, and flat surface
- Front surface, concave, and plane (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Front surface, concave, and plane
Dental mirrors come in three main types, each offering distinct advantages for intraoral examination. Front surface mirrors provide the clearest image by eliminating ghost images, as the reflective coating is on the front of the glass. Concave (magnifying) mirrors enlarge the image, which can be useful for detailed inspection, while plane (flat) mirrors offer a true-to-size image without magnification or distortion.
Question 4: What is the vomiting-inducing substance that bulimics frequently abuse?
- Antipsychotics
- Anticonvulsants
- Anticoagulants
- Emetics (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Emetics
Emetics are substances specifically used to induce vomiting. Individuals with bulimia nervosa may abuse emetics, such as ipecac syrup, as a compensatory behavior to purge food after binge eating. This practice is extremely dangerous and can lead to severe electrolyte imbalances, cardiac arrhythmias, and other serious health complications.
Question 5: When during pregnancy is the ideal time to get dental work done?
- Never
- Third trimester
- Second trimester (Correct answer)
- First trimester
Correct answer: Second trimester
The second trimester is generally considered the safest and most ideal time for routine dental treatment during pregnancy. By this stage, the risk of miscarriage has decreased, and the developing fetus is less susceptible to teratogenic effects compared to the first trimester. Additionally, the mother is typically more comfortable and less prone to nausea than in the first or third trimesters, making dental procedures more manageable.
Question 6: What kind of patient frequently attends the doctor's office and complains of pain?
- Teenagers
- Drug addicts (Correct answer)
- Anorexics
- Pregnant women
Correct answer: Drug addicts
Individuals with drug addiction may frequently visit healthcare providers, including dental offices, complaining of pain as a means to obtain prescription opioids. They might exaggerate symptoms or fabricate conditions to secure pain medication. Healthcare professionals must be vigilant in assessing such complaints and identifying potential drug-seeking behaviors to prevent misuse and diversion of controlled substances.
Question 7: How many different forms of exposure may ionized radiation cause in the body?
- one
- two (Correct answer)
- three
- four
Correct answer: two
Ionizing radiation exposure can cause two main types of biological effects: somatic and genetic. Somatic effects manifest in the exposed individual, such as cancer or cataracts, and can be either deterministic (severity increases with dose) or stochastic (probability increases with dose). Genetic effects, on the other hand, occur in the offspring of the exposed individual due to damage to reproductive cells, potentially leading to hereditary diseases.
