What does the PSI exam actually look like? Format, timing, and question types
I'm scheduled to sit the PSI exam at a testing center next month and I'm struggling to find concrete details about the actual format. Does anyone know how many questions are on it, what the time limit is, and whether it's purely multiple choice or if there are scenario-based questions mixed in?
I've been working as a fire safety instructor for about six years and I feel confident on the practical side, but I get anxious about formal psi exams because I haven't sat one in years. I want to make sure I'm pacing myself correctly — if the exam is 150 questions with a 3-hour window that's very different prep than 80 questions in 90 minutes.
I found this Public Safety Instructor Certification guide which helped me understand the domains, but I still can't pin down the exact structure. If you've recently been to a psi testing center, please share what you remember about the breakdown. I'm especially curious whether the instructional methodology section is weighted heavily or if emergency response scenarios dominate the exam.
Took it last spring at the PSI testing center in Houston. From what I recall it was around 120 questions, all multiple choice, and you get about two hours. The instructional design section surprised me — there were a lot more questions about adult learning theory than I expected. Pace yourself and don't rush the scenario questions near the end, they take longer to read.
The question breakdown can vary slightly by state endorsement, so check with your certifying body. I had roughly 30% on emergency response fundamentals and 40% on instructional methodology. The remaining 30% covered safety regulations. I used practice tests from the PTG site and felt well prepared. Good luck next month!
