• Pulse: People often tap their feet to the steady, underlying rhythm when listening to music. Here is a straightforward square row that depicts a heartbeat. You’ll notice they are all the same size and always spaced equally apart. This is because the pulse is constant, and each beat has an identical duration. We now need to determine the value of these beats to quantify musical time appropriately. And to do this, we must give the pulse a note value. We will therefore substitute a note value, such as quarters, for the squares. Therefore, we have a pulse in which each beat is a quarter note. Since we know that 1 beat equals 1 quarter note, we can calculate how many beats each note is worth. We can do this because we already know how long each note value is relative to the others. As a result, if a quarter note takes one beat, a full note takes four, a half note takes two, and so on.
• Tempo: The pulse can be played at any speed, from quick to slow. Tempo refers to the song’s pace (or speed), and on sheet music, it is denoted by certain musical terminology (traditionally in Italian, but there are hundreds of terms in many languages). Beats per minute are used to describe tempo. The six most popular Italian names for tempo, their definitions, and their corresponding beats per minute are listed in the following table.
• Accent: Different beats are accentuated in different ways. Musicians don’t force this; it just organically happens when patterns in the music develop. Let’s use the quarter note pulse as an illustration. It is fairly basic, but there are several ways to play it. The fact that we can hear these groups even without reading the written music is incredibly remarkable. One possibility is to divide them into two groups of three-quarter notes. And we can achieve this because every group’s initial beat is accentuated. In music, these units are known as meters. The splitting of beats into equal portions is known as a meter. We’ll see that these groups are called measures (or bars) in music and are divided by bar lines.
