AzM2, the second version of AzMERIT, is an annual statewide test that assesses students’ English language arts and math skills. AzM2 is matched with what your child is learning during the year and goes beyond multiple-choice questions to assess genuine learning, focusing on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is usually given over the course of three days of assessment. While the Arizona Department of Education provides minute-by-minute suggestions for each test, many schools provide one full day of writing and two days of half math and half-reading.
AzMERIT, or Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Criteria, assesses pupils on more demanding learning standards than the prior test, AIMS. The test was also designed to include more open-ended questions and was quickly introduced.
Arizona students in public and charter schools take the AzM2 reading, writing, and math test every year from third through eighth grade. The grade level AzM2 tests in English language arts and math are administered to 10th graders in high school. The test provides a picture of a student’s academic performance. This spring, all Arizona public school students in grades 3 through 8 and high school students in grades 10 will be required to take the AzM2 exam. If your child is taking classes online this year, your local district or charter school is working hard to create arrangements for them to attend in person.
AzM2 Portal

AzM2 Scores
By July 23rd, all AzM2 individual score reports will be sent to schools. Schools will share score reports with parents and caregivers to provide information on your kid’s performance and particular skills that you and his or her teacher can work on with your child. In 2021, 35.0 percent of Arizona students passed the AzM2 English Language Arts exam (ELA). Overall, AzM2 scores in 2021 were lower than in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the statewide test was not given in 2020. For children and instructors, the pandemic created a difficult situation. In Arizona, the number of kids passing the AzM2 ELA test in third grade has dropped by over 11 percentage points. Sample score reports are available at AzM2Portal.org.
What is the AzM2?
The Arizona AzM2 (Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching) is a test that assesses students’ knowledge in core academic subjects. This test, which replaces the former AIMS testing, is given to most Arizona students online. Arizona collaborates with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to develop Arizona-specific examinations. AzMERIT will run on a PC. A paper-based version will be offered for schools that are not yet ready to administer a computer-based exam. AzM2 focuses on grade-level content and adheres to state standards. The test questions correspond to what students do and learn in the classroom every day throughout the year, highlighting the abilities that students must master to progress to a more difficult subject.
AzM2 Writing
Because AzM2 is a new exam, writing will be evaluated differently. Students in grades 3 through 12 must be comfortable using information from sources they’ve read in their writing (teachers should refer to their grade-level standards for specific expectations regarding the use of evidence). It’s particularly critical that projects require pupils to gather knowledge from numerous sources in the upper grades. Students should also practice reading internet sources, not all of the time, but enough to feel comfortable. The close reading methods are vital, but if students have only utilized hard copy literature and have physically highlighted and marked their sources, they will struggle with the online reading required by AzMERIT. Between April 5 and April 23, students from all schools will take the AzM2 Writing Test. Don’t hesitate to contact your school for the specific examination date(s).
What does AzM2 Stand For?
AzM2 assesses students’ understanding of the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards in English, Math, and Writing. It is the second form of AzMERIT and stands for it. The Arizona State Board of Education approved in November 2014 to replace AIMS with AZMERIT. AzMERIT was renamed AzM2 in 2019. Our children will be better equipped to enter an increasingly competitive world after graduation as our state standards and exams become more rigorous. AzMERIT is a more academically difficult version of AIMS that examines students’ knowledge and mastery of new and higher educational requirements. Furthermore, the AzMERIT exam is computer-based instead of AIMS, which was a paper-based test.
AzM2 Calculator
Arizona’s state tests have gone through a few name changes over the years: what once was AzMerit became AzM2 and is now Arizona’s Academic Standards Assessments. Calculators are permitted on AzM2 Grades 7 and 8 Math Part 1 and both parts of Grade 10 Math tests. On tests where calculators are permitted, it is ideal for a student to use the recommended acceptable calculator. If the recommended calculator is not available, students may use a calculator with less functionality. The online calculators available for the CBT assessment are available for practice use on the AzM2 Portal. No laptop, tablet, or phone-based calculators may be used during the AzM2 assessment unless accessed through the AzM2 Secure Browser installed on the device. Students are not allowed to share calculators during a testing session. The table below lists the types of calculators permitted.

Azm2 Test Prep
If you’ve taken AZ Merit or AzM2, you already know that computer-based assessments necessitate more than just topic knowledge. Your students must be familiar with and comfortable with the virtual testing technologies they will use on test day. Technology-enhanced questions are used in computer-based assessments like AASA and AzSCI (and earlier AzM2), so your pupils won’t merely be faced with multiple-choice questions. Have your pupils take practice tests on the same device they’ll use for AASA and AzSCI to get the best preparation. Students are urged to take an online AzM2 practice test. Students can take practice tests in reading, writing, and math. They’ll know exactly how their device interacts with the test-taking equipment when test day arrives.
AzM2 Science
AIMS Science is a Standards-Based Assessment that assesses students’ understanding of the Arizona Academic Content Standard in Science. It complies with federal student assessment regulations. The AIMS Science test, which is a multiple-choice, non-timed test, will be taken by students in the fourth and eighth grades only. In grades 5, 8, and 11, Arizona students are evaluated on science themes using AzSCI, the state’s science assessment. The content of the AzSCI test is linked with Arizona’s 2018 scientific standards and contains items specific to Arizona. In addition, the exam includes technology-enhanced questions such as inline responses, fill-in-the-blank, and two-part questions, as well as access to the Desmos calculator for students to use when answering questions.
Is AzM2 Mandatory
This spring, all Arizona public school students in grades 3 through 8 and high school students in grades 10 will be required to take the AzM2 exam. Schools in Arizona will not be penalized if pupils fail to take standardized tests. The AzM2 is not a graduation requirement. While the exam is not needed for graduation, it is the most accurate tool for determining if your child has mastered crucial skills. A new test was required due to the adoption and implementation of new standards. AzMERIT will be taken by Arizona public school students in grades 3 through 12. Students are given a series of tests over which they have no control. There will be no reward if they succeed. There will be no accountability if they fail terribly. No matter how well they perform on the test, students will advance to the next grade or graduate from high school.
